Gaining real engagement today can be a challenge for museums and cultural spaces. The diversity of languages, ages, and interests makes it difficult to find the right approach for each visitor, and to truly connect with them.
But, how can museums improve engagement and offer visitors a truly memorable experience? There are several important factors to consider, such as identifying your audience, choosing the right type of content, determining the ideal tour duration, and selecting appropriate vocabulary and tone for narration.
So today, we’ve put together some helpful tips and tricks to show you the best ways to achieve real engagement in your space.
Not-too-long audios are key. Extended narrations can cause visitors to lose interest and become distracted. Instead of aiming for 5-minute audios per stop, consider the following recommended durations:
- Museum/Art Exhibits (1–2 minutes): Keeps visitors moving and engaged while avoiding information overload.
- Historic Sites/Monuments (1.5–3 minutes): Allows for deeper storytelling and historical context.
- Outdoor Walking Tours (2–3 minutes): Accounts for variable walking speeds and environmental distractions.
- Children’s/Family Tours (30 seconds–1.5 minutes): Short attention spans need concise and engaging content.
TIP: Position your audio stops in easily accessible spots to prevent visitors from skipping them, which can reduce the performance of the tour.
The Right Vocabulary, Tone, and Voice
A key part of helping your visitors connect with your story is making sure they “click” with the narration, whether it’s through vocabulary, tone of voice, or both. This plays an important role, because if they don’t connect from the start, your story might lose its impact right away.
Tailor your vocabulary to match the personality of your exhibition. For younger audiences especially, this helps spark curiosity and encourage deeper engagement.
TIP: Experiment with voice narration and background sounds to create a more immersive atmosphere.

This is your chance to make your exhibition truly stand out. With today’s tools, the possibilities are nearly endless.
- TIP #1: Combine audio and video synchronization. Deliver content through multiple senses for a more complete and interactive experience.
- TIP #2: Know your audience. Create customized tours, one standard, one for children, or even a special edition for temporary exhibits.
- TIP #3: Make sure to include an accessible audio guide for blind visitors, this allows them to experience the exhibit in a meaningful and inclusive way.
- TIP #4: Offer multilingual audio guides. With the tourism sector growing rapidly, having more than two languages available is definitely a must.
- TIP #5: Use AI to simplify your workflow. Let it help you adapt scripts, translate content, or even build new tours from scratch.
- TIP #6: Add trivia and games. Encourage visitors to pay attention, then test their knowledge in a fun way!
- EXTRA TIP: Sometimes more means less—more distractions, less engagement, and less connection. Embrace the #SkipTheScreen mindset and encourage guests to be fully present in the moment with an audio-only guide.
