How can zoos attract new audiences?

The ARTIS Royal Amsterdam Zoo has a clear mission: inspire and encourage a broad section of the public to treat nature responsibly. While their primary audience is families, ARTIS creates projects with specific themes to attract new audiences. ‘De Veelkleurige Liefdesroute’ project was aimed at young adults (18-30).

Challenge

Some themes and stories don’t come across with the exclusive use of information boards. There is so much to say that keeping it to only text can narrow the message’s reach.

Sexual diversity is a recurring annual theme for ARTIS. ‘De Veelkleurige Liefdesroute’ project was about sharing knowledge of sexual diversity in nature: humans, animals, plants in all shapes and colors.

With high ambitions for the project, the singer, songwriter, and visual artist Jeangu Macrooy was invited to be the voice and narrator to tell the story. Besides his extraordinary voice, he is an artist that personally connects with the theme. They knew an audio tour was key to conveying their message.

Solution

For ARTIS, the implementation of an audio tour allows visitors to listen to the stories while experiencing nature around them, but they also use them for educational purposes; visitors interested in knowing more get an extra layer of information without being distracted from their surroundings.

ARTIS chose the Mobile Website to share the stories of the ‘De Veelkleurige Liefdesroute’ project 2021, narrated by the voice of Jeangu Macrooy. With a simple QR Code scan, visitors accessed a user-friendly solution. All they needed was to listen and enjoy the experience.

Results

The result was an audio tour with 14 stops. Each story was unique, sharing a different perspective of sexual diversity in nature—reaching younger audiences who visited ARTIS during the summer.

The voice of Jeangu Macrooy narrating the tour was a success! ARTIS saw an increased appreciation of sexual diversity in nature, and the knowledge was transferred to visitors. One lesson learned from the visitors’ feedback was about the story’s length; by shortening the duration of the stops, they can optimize the audio tour experience.

So, what are the possibilities of audio guides in the zoo's visitor experience?

The ARTIS Royal Amsterdam Zoo is considering setting up temporary tours with different themes to reach different audiences. 'De Veelkleurige Liefdesroute' 2021 proved that this approach was received successfully, with an audio tour solution easy to access and easy to use.
